Pickup towing an enclosed cargo trailer, with 2026 Dallas enclosed trailer rental prices of $50–$165 per day

Moving out of a Plano apartment, hauling tools between job sites in Garland, or taking a booth to a trade show in downtown Dallas? An enclosed trailer keeps everything dry, out of sight and locked up. In 2026, most enclosed cargo trailers in Dallas–Fort Worth rent for about $50 to $165 a day, depending on size. A 6x12 starts around $50, and a 20–28 ft trailer runs $100 or more.

This guide covers DFW enclosed trailer prices by size, what fits in each one, what you need to tow it, and how to load it safely. Prefer an open deck? See our guides to flatbed trailer rental and dump trailer rental in Dallas.

Enclosed Trailer Sizes: Which One Do You Need?

Size an enclosed trailer by floor space and door height, not just length. Here's how common sizes compare:

Size

Floor space

Typical weight rating

Usually tows with

6x12

About 72 sq ft

About 3,000–7,000 lbs (single or tandem axle)

Half-ton pickup or mid-size SUV

7x14

About 98 sq ft

7,000 lbs

Full-size pickup or large SUV

16 ft x 84 in (7x16)

About 112 sq ft

7,000 lbs

Full-size pickup or large SUV

24 ft x 85 in

About 170 sq ft

10,000 lbs

Heavy-duty pickup

Measure your biggest item before you book: a sofa, a gun safe, a side-by-side or a trade show crate. Check the door width and interior height too, not just the length of the box. When in doubt, go one size up. An extra few feet costs less than a second trip.

What fits in a 16 ft enclosed trailer?

A 16 ft trailer is big enough for real work and still easy to tow, park and back into a driveway. Renters use ours for apartment and small home moves, contractor tools and gang boxes, event booths and stock, and motorcycles, ATVs or lawn equipment. Those roll right up the rear ramp door.

What fits in a 24 ft enclosed trailer?

A 24 ft trailer handles larger home and office moves, side-by-sides and golf carts, trade show exhibits, store fixtures and bulky contractor materials. With D-rings for tie-downs and a heavy-duty ramp door, it can often carry a car too. The car has to fit through the door, and the total weight has to stay within the trailer's rating.

Enclosed Trailer vs. Utility Trailer vs. Box Truck

Option

Choose it when

Enclosed trailer

You have a truck that can tow it, and your cargo needs to stay dry, secure or hidden. It's also good if you want to park it loaded overnight.

Open utility trailer

The load is weather-proof and you want the lowest price and the easiest loading, like mulch, a mower or brush.

Box truck delivery

You don't have a tow vehicle, or you want a driver and a liftgate to handle palletized freight for you.

Enclosed hot shot

You need the protection of an enclosed trailer but would rather have a professional truck and driver move the load.

See what a driver costs in our guide to box truck delivery costs in Texas.

How Much Weight Can an Enclosed Trailer Carry?

Walls, a roof and a ramp door make enclosed trailers heavier than open trailers of the same size. That means less of the weight rating is left for cargo. To find the payload, subtract the trailer's empty weight from its GVWR, shown on the VIN plate or the rental listing. Then make sure your truck's towing capacity covers the loaded trailer.

When you load, follow these guidelines:

  • Put about 60% of the weight in the front half of the trailer, ahead of the axles. Heavy items should go low and toward the front.

  • Aim for about 10–15% of the loaded trailer's weight on the hitch. Too little tongue weight is a common cause of trailer sway.

  • Balance the load side to side, and strap tall items to the D-rings or E-track so nothing shifts when you brake.

  • Fill gaps with blankets or boxes so furniture can't slide.

What You Need to Tow an Enclosed Trailer in Texas

  • The right truck. A 7,000 lb trailer usually needs a full-size pickup or large SUV rated for that weight. A 10,000 lb trailer needs a heavy-duty pickup.

  • The right hitch and plug. Most 14–24 ft enclosed trailers use a 2-5/16" ball and a 7-pin plug.

  • A brake controller. Texas requires brakes on trailers over 4,500 lbs gross weight, and they need a working controller in the truck. Our Texas trailer laws guide has the details.

  • The right license. A regular Class C license covers both our enclosed trailers, because they're rated 10,000 lbs or less.

  • ID, insurance and a deposit. Bring a valid driver's license, current insurance and a credit card. At Mr. Whiz Logistics, renters must be 21 or older.

Enclosed trailers act like a sail in North Texas crosswinds. Slow down on open highways like I-20, I-30 and I-35, and leave extra room to stop. Know your total height before you pull into a drive-thru, parking garage or gas station canopy.

Moving With an Enclosed Trailer in DFW: Tips

  1. Reserve early. Weekend trailers book up fastest, so a weekday pickup is often easier to get.

  2. Load the heaviest items first, against the front wall: appliances, dressers and boxed books.

  3. Use moving blankets and straps on every tall item.

  4. Lock it every time you stop, even for a few minutes, with a padlock on the rear door and the side door.

  5. Check your HOA or apartment rules before parking a loaded trailer overnight.

  6. Do a walk-around before each leg of the trip: the coupler latch, chains, breakaway cable, lights and tire pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to rent an enclosed trailer in Dallas?

Most enclosed trailers in Dallas–Fort Worth rent for about $50 to $165 a day in 2026. A 6x12 runs about $50–$80, a 7x14 to 7x16 about $80–$120, and 20–28 ft trailers about $100–$165.

Does U-Haul rent enclosed trailers?

Yes. U-Haul rents small enclosed cargo trailers in 4x8, 5x8 and 6x12 sizes. For 14–24 ft enclosed trailers, contractor-grade features like D-rings, or a trailer big enough for a side-by-side, you'll need a trailer rental company.

What size enclosed trailer do I need to move?

It depends on how much you have. A 6x12 suits a dorm or studio move. A 7x14 to 16 ft trailer handles most apartment moves. A 24 ft trailer is better for a larger home or an office.

Can I move a car in an enclosed trailer?

Often, yes, in a 20–24 ft enclosed trailer, as long as the car fits through the ramp door and the total weight stays within the trailer's rating. Tie it down by the wheels or axles to the D-rings.

Do enclosed trailers need brakes in Texas?

Yes, if the trailer's gross weight is over 4,500 lbs and you tow it faster than 30 mph. That covers most enclosed trailers 14 ft and longer. Trailers over 4,500 lbs also need a breakaway system.

Do I need a special license to pull an enclosed trailer in Texas?

Usually not. A Class C license covers trailers rated 10,000 lbs or less behind a normal pickup or SUV. You only need a Class A license if the trailer is rated over 10,000 lbs and the combination is rated 26,001 lbs or more.

Can I rent an enclosed trailer one way?

One-way trailer rentals are mostly offered by national chains. Local rental companies usually rent round-trip from their lot. If you need a load moved one way, a hot shot or box truck delivery can be simpler.
